INVISIBLE MAN

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, not to be confused with H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man, was published in 1952. It depicts a black man, his journey from the Deep South to the slums of Harlem, and the many struggles with issues, such as racism and bigotry, from both whites and blacks alike. A couple sentences of the Prologue best illustrate the mind-set of the main character. “I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids—and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me".
